In honor of the late Paul Pryor, the founder of Crossroads Housing in 1999, this program was renamed Pryor's Projects in March of 2024. In the beginning, this program was the nuts and bolts of Crossroads Housing. At the time, the program was originally called “Fresh Start.” The first project that was done by Crossroads Housing was a property that was gifted to Crossroads by the city of Big Spring, TX. Paul, being a carpenter by trade, was to do most if not all the work on the Fresh Start projects. Unfortunately, Paul was diagnosed with MS in that time frame. While he could do some of the work, his vision would not completely come to fruition without overseeing outside contractors.
Now Pryor’s Projects locates and identifies dilapidated, vacant, single family housing property units. We cost effectively rehabilitate these properties back into livable homes that are safe and affordable for low-income families.
Paul Pryor started this program by identifying a need that his skills and talent could impact for the better. He was a carpenter. He saw vacant properties and he saw families in need. By connecting those dots, he started a great program. While we are not carpenters, there are still vacant and dilapidated properties that can be turned around. There are also families that need proper housing. These are Pryor’s Projects.
Our CHIP IN Program's main objective is to help low-income homeowners make small to medium sized repairs to their homes. We target issues with plumbing, electrical, heating/AC or roofing or the like. This program is not for cosmetic repairs such as painting or other repairs that are not crucial to the health, safety and security of the household. If you or someone you know could use our help, please contact us.
Each year we choose a number of homes with dilapidated roofs to replace for qualified low-income households. We believe that income level should not prevent a family from having the basic shelter a roof provides. Unfortunately though, it does. Most of the roofs we replace are on homes that do not have home insurance. Without insurance, roof repairs or replacement are very expensive. Constant exposure to elements from weather over time will damage a roof if proper care and repairs are not done. However, it is often not neglect that allows a roof to come into disrepair, but rather affordability. Our program can help. If you or someone you know has major damage to their roof, please contact us. We can help those who qualify.
We are proud to offer our Down Payment Assistance program to qualified low-income home buyers.
We fund the Deposit Assistance program which is administered by the Big Spring Housing Authority to help with utility deposits and rental deposits for their voucher program clients.
